Abstract
The article demonstrates the influence of A. N. Whitehead on S. K. Langer's philosophy particularly regarding Langer's concept of presentational symbols. These can be understood as motivated by a central idea of Whitehead's philosophy of organism. The concept of presentational symbols, which Langer uses as the basis for a philosophy of art, becomes in turn her starting point for a theory of life as developed in her magnum opus "Mind: An Essay on Human Feeling". The conceptual framework of the theory of life shows parallels to Whitehead's metaphysics. But it is also a novel contribution to process thought and points the way for an extension of process metaphysics. [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
