Abstract
This article follows Whitehead's influence on Susanne Langer's philosophical development, beginning with his supervision of her doctoral dissertation in the mid-1920s and extending through the writing of "Mind: An Essay on Human Feeling", which was published in three volumes between 1967 and 1982. Whitehead's metaphysical writings influenced Langer's perspective on the history of philosophy, as well as her understanding of the dynamics of human consciousness and its underlying basis in biological processes; his concept of the actual entity influenced the conceptual framework -- including the pivotal concept of the act -- that Langer developed to support the project of Mind.
