Abstract
This article makes the claim that pastoral theology and counseling, under the tutelage of modern psychology, has taken the abstracted individual as its ideal and primary focus. This individualistic approach has not been helpful in understanding the context of black families. The article compares two theological perspectives, namely black liberation and process theologies. It assesses the contribution these theological perspectives make in work with black families. "A black pastoral systemic model" for family care and counseling is identified. Information is organized around a particular case presentation. Implications of black and process theology for pastoral care are drawn. [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
