Abstract

Despite the habitual association of Whitehead with "evolutionist" philosophers such as Bergson, Alexander and C. Lloyd Morgan, there is surprisingly little influence of evolutionist philosophers on Whitehead's writing.  He does not discuss "evolution" in great detail, does not appear cognizant of the radical differences between Lamarckian and Darwinian approaches, and does not evaluate or appropriate or reformulate the central ideas of his (mostly Lamarckian) predecessors and contemporaries in "evolutionary cosmology."  Accordingly, Whitehead's version of "process" philosophy constitutes a sharp break with the older evolutionist approach.  [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
