Abstract

The article seeks: (1) to show that there is a distinctively American line of theological work, and (2) to argue that 'empirical process theologians', rather than 'rationalistic process theologians', are the true heirs to that tradition.  The American line is identified by James's term 'radical empiricism', and is traced through four radical empiricists (J. Edwards, W. James, J. Dewey, A. N. Whitehead) and three empirical process theologians (H. N. Wieman, B. Meland, B Loomer).  C. Hartshorne is cited as the principal rationalistic process theologian.  The paper concludes with a call for what even the empirical theologians still lack: an historical hermeneutic.  [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
