Abstract

The article deals with the claim made by John D. Barrow and Frank J. Opler, both authors of "The Anthropic Cosmological Principle" (Oxford Univ Press, 1980, p 216) on the inconsistency of Whitehead's two views about the nature of time: In "The Concept of Time", he insists on "the global nature of time", and in his "Science and Modern World", he denies the existence of the unique present.  In my book, "Bergson and Modern Physics", to which both authors refer (pp 252-3),I pointed out that the non-metrical character of Whitehead's "creative nature of time" is compatible with his denial of the absoluteness of one present instant.  In other words, "contemporaneity" is different from alleged "co-instantaneity."  [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
