Abstract

I compare Whitehead's notion of adventure with Merleau-Ponty's notion of ambiguity.  The actual occasion is an atom of adventure and an atom of ambiguity.  The four phases of the actual occasion each require ambiguity.  Freedom requires ambiguity.  A prehension is a molecule of intentionality: it resembles the general body-world relationship.  Commitment, understood as serial and cumulative decisiveness in an atmosphere of ambiguity, is essential to the definition of person.  [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
