Abstract
Beginning with a detailed study of published narratives, this article offers a model of historical explanation derived from Whiteheadian process doctrines and from concepts of literary criticism. The internal emergent structure of events is analyzed into phases of symbolic interaction analogous to the dynamics of narrative accounts. Development of normic or regularity hypotheses is also discussed. Reciprocity between analytic and narrative modes of understanding is stressed. [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
