Abstract

This essay seeks to show that Whitehead's metaphysics imply an understanding of happiness -- and, therefore, of political life -- that contrasts significantly with the tradition of political liberalism.  It is asserted that liberalism has a "private view of happiness," such that human community is solely instrumental to the human good.  In contrast, the paper argues that Whitehead's philosophy implies that human community is a principal constituent of happiness.  More precisely, political life in this perspective should seek to maximize the public world, i.e., the world created by human communication.  [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
