Abstract
By a variety of devices, many of which are illustrated here, it is possible to determine some 17 stages in Whitehead's composition of Process and Reality. Whitehead's thought then can be understood in a dialectical fashion, for at its stage Whitehead proposes a reasonably coherent view of the whole, only to find his solution to be problematic, and to resolve that problem in an unanticipated way. Thus he has no subjective aim at first, then seeks to derive it from the emergent occasion itself, and finally derives it from God. By studying the composition of Process and Reality, we can discover how a major thinker goes about creating his masterpiece. [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
