Abstract

Susanne K Langer's view is that an art symbol's import is the illusion it effects.  This article finds support and clarification for that view through Whitehead's system.  When an art symbol is prehended aesthetically, novel potentialities are felt through reversion as virtual and efficacious.  Derived conceptual data are finally felt as more efficacious than related physical ones.  Artistic illusion is the result.  Music's illusion, virtual time, presents the temporal shape of human experience, thus expanding our awareness of our humanity.  [Abstract from The Philosopher’s Index]
