Abstract
Croce's philosophy of spirit in its account of human action is interpreted as analogous to Whitehead's theory of concrescence. On the basis of this similarity, Croce's doctrine of the historical judgment, his claim that all history is contemporary history, is clarified by expressing it in Whitehead's systematic language; and Croce is shown to provide a dialectical interpretation of Whiteheadian becoming that avoids the pitfalls of utopian romanticism.
