Abstract
Donald Sherburne has argued in "Whitehead Without God" (Process Philosophy and Christian Thought, ed. By Brown, James, and Reeves, Bobbs-Merrill, 1971) that Whitehead's philosophy would be more coherent without God. Against his arguments it is held that Whitehead's reason for positing God is not, as he alleges, the need for a ground of giveness of the past; that the doctrine of God's regional inclusion of other entities is defensible; and that in any case Whitehead's position is independent of this since he did not attribute extensiveness to God.
