Wood, Forrest, Jr. “A Whiteheadian Concept of the Self.” Chap. 6 in Whiteheadian Thought as a Basis for a Philosophy of Religion. Lanham, MD: University Press of America, 1986.

Abstract

The self should be understood as an “entirely living nexus” of actual entities. Three aspects of Whitehead’s metaphysics are dealt with because of their helpfulness in understanding the self. They are (1) creativity (originality and initiative) (2) the relation of the past to the present and (3) the subjective aim. It is argued that this analysis of the self forms a more adequate basis for dealing with people.
