Abstract

A speculative theory of how experience is related to the brain is framed according to the categories of Whitehead’s process cosmology. Whereas neuroscientists commonly assume that experiences are the outcome of brain events, the present theory assumes that brain events are the outcome of experiences. The theory is also informed by the ideas of Charles Hartshorne and of modern holistic approaches such as general systems theory. Thus, it associates experience with the general field properties of the body–specifically with the electrical field of the brain.
