Abstract

Chinese Western area covers six provinces, five autonomous regions and one municipal city, with an area of 5.41 million square kilometers and a population of 287 million, accounting for 56% of the country's territory and 23% of the national population respectively. The economy of the Western area is stagnant; natural environment is grim and the ecosystem is fragile comparatively. It is very important to balance the economic development and environmental protection.
