Abstract

Victor Pasmore and Richard Hamilton, artist-members of the institute of contemporary arts, London c1950-60, were influenced by theories of process, morphology and organic formation.  Principal written sources were D'Arcy W. Thompson's "On Growth and Form" (Cambridge UP 1917; 1942) and Alfred N Whitehead's "Science and the Modern World" (Cambridge UP 1926).  Interpretation was assisted and popularized by Herbert Read and Lancelot L. Whyte (editor) "Aspects of Form" (Lund Humphries, London 1951).  [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
