Abstract
The aesthetic philosophy of Herbert Read (1893-1968) was spontaneous and intuitive yet his writings embody enduring values. They are both eclectic (leaning to Nietzsche, Eliot, Whitehead, Freud and Jung) and original. This survey finds continuity in an apparently erratic system of thought, which engages both 'formlessness' and 'form' and culminates in a theory of organic, symbolic formation, a characteristic of authentic creativity read perceived in the contemporary English art of his time.
