Romero, Gorgias. “On the title of Process and Reality.” Seminar paper presented in Butler, Claremont School of Theology. September 22, 2008.
Abstract
Following a suggestive comment made by Whitehead himself, this paper considers the ambiguities of meaning in the conjunction "and". It applies this analysis to the specific case of the title of Process and Reality and presents four different readings according how the conjunction is understood, as a relation either of identity of or difference between the two notions. If they are understood as different, the relation might appear as exclusive or complementary, in the latter case at two specified levels. The four reading follow the approaches of Susinos Ruiz, Wells, Lowe and Sherburne respectively. In the case of Lowe, and within the opposition between the philosophies of Whitehead and Bergson, personal considerations will be introduced explanatory of Whitehead's general doctrine. A correct or final solution is not offered and the ambiguity is left open. The bibliography used is indicated in the footnotes.
