Regan, Thomas J. “The Matrix of Personality: A Whiteheadian Corroboration of Harry Stack Sullivan’s Interpersonal Theory of Psychiatry.” Process Studies 19, no.3 (Fall 1990): 189-98.
Abstract
Sullivan himself recognized the potential of Whitehead’s process philosophy to serve as the conceptual ground for a theory of psychiatry. It is here shown that Whitehead’s ontology is able not only to corroborate most of the central insights of Sullivan’s interpersonal theory of psychiatry, but that it is capable of going beyond it. Inchoate in Whitehead’s writings are shown to be distinct developmental stages which when brought together reveal a theory of personality even more comprehensive than Sullivan’s.
