Pittenger, Norman. Freed to Love: A Process Interpretation of Redemption. Wilton, CT: Morehouse-Barlow, 1987.
Abstract
Professor Pittenger strives to
show how theology can "make sense of our contemporary understanding of
how things go in the world." The well-known author of such widely
received books as Before
the Ending of the Day, The Lure of Divine Love,
and Preaching the Gospel
here turns to the central affirmation of Christian faith, that "God was
in Christ reconciling the world to himself." Process Theology,
associated with such theologians as Schubert Ogden and Charles
Hartshorne, offers particularly helpful insights into the deliverance
offered by Christ from our human predicament. Pittenger concentrates on
his earlier conclusion that God is best conceived as "Love-in-Act" or
"Lover-in-Act" and applies that striking notion to the issue of
redemption. Along the way, he discusses such core issues as the
Christian community, eucharistic worship, liberation theology, and
prayer.
