Abstract
Scholarly treatments of the points of congruence and incongruence between the metaphysical ideas of C. G. Jung (1875-1961) and A. N. Whitehead (1861-1947) often rely on analogical bridges that do not take into account the broader historical context within which these men lived and worked. In my presentation, I will offer an alternative approach to understanding the thought of Jung and Whitehead by positioning their texts within the broader intellectual currents of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Lebensphilosophie and vitalism. I argue that the surface similarities in the ideas between these two men are better understood within the vitalistic discourse of their historical epoch.
