Abstract
Three interpretative approaches to Whitehead are considered: the traditional, the genetic, and the systematic. The first makes three assumptions: that Whitehead's entire metaphysical system is expressed in Process and Reality; that only that system is expressed therein; and that the same system finds partial expression in Whitehead's earlier works. The first of these assumptions is the only one accepted by Lewis Ford's genetic approach, whereas it is the only one rejected by the author's systematic approach. Whitehead's pronouncements on his development and on how his books should be read support the systematic approach, but contradict the first assumption of the traditional approach and all the assumptions of the genetic approach.
