Meland, Bernard Eugene.  “The Pathology of Form and Symbol.” (Unpubl. 1939)

Abstract

Though human expressiveness can occur only through fallible forms, pathology arises when these fallible forms are taken as ultimate and the divine is identified completely with our own creations.  Both Catholicism and Protestantism have erred in their treatment of symbols, the former in its identification of man's creation with the creations of God, the latter in its denial of symbols and disvaluation of the creation itself.
