Kunene, Mazisi. Emperor Shaka the Great. London: Heineman, 1979.
Abstract
The great leader Shaka has occupied in the
minds of Africans the place that Caesar occupies in the minds of
Europeans. The Zulus have found their singer in the poet Mazisi Kunene
who has written, in Zulu, this epic praise song, a massive rendering of
the traditional oral history of his people. It has yet to be published
in its original language because their land is still occupied. In the
meantime Mazisi Kunene has rendered this magnificent story in English
so that people across the world can hear what the Zulus themselves have
to say about their empire and its conquests.
