Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the possibility of a new metaphysics through Whitehead’s organic philosophy. This possibility is related to the theory of actuality in Whitehead’s metaphysics. Actuality is central to what Whitehead refers to as the process and finite. Actuality is the agent of process, determining the outcome of concrescence by freely responding, within its own actual limitations, to stubborn fact and the value of the relevant possibilities. Another question about the ‘finite’ aims is: What is the process by which the aims, or ideals, impose their character on the organism? In other words, how do the aims guide the process of organic formation? Whitehead’s answer is that this process is aesthetic. While Aristotle and Plato end with an ideal, Whitehead believes that an ideal which is realized in process is in itself multiplicity. For him purpose is allied to aesthetics. Here aesthetics means the realization of intensity, while intensity means realization of contrasts. The order (i.e. harmony) of intensity means the absence of attenuations in the pattern would introduce and other elements inhibit. In this way, Whitehead believes the principle of process and finite (ideal or purpose).

완 고한 사실은 과정이며, 이는 작용인의 역할을, 유한한 실현은 현실태의 목적인 역할을 한다. 즉 공공성에서 사적으로 나아가는 과정을 현실태의 목적인이라고 할 수 있고, 사사성에서 공공성으로 나아가는 과정을 현실태의 작용인인 것이다. 이러한 특징은 '관계'와 '가치' 혹은 '과정'과 '강도'개념이다. 우리는 새로운 관계, 새로운 가치의 증식이 필요한 시대에 살고 있다. 그러므로 근대의 자본주의와 민주주의를 가능하게 한 과학적이고 수학적인 패러다임에서 벗어나서, 새로운 사유를 전개할 필요성을 마주하고 있다. 이때 우리는 하나의 대안으로 과정과 미적 가치를 결합하고 있는 화이트헤드의 유기체 철학을 하나의 대안으로 고려해 불 수 있다. 화이트헤드는 "종래의 철학적 사고로부터 다소 벗어나는 특성을 내포하고 있는" (  PR 72) 새로운 형이상학을 제시하고 있다.  따라서 화이트헤드는 자신의 새로운 형이상학에서 "관계적힘"으로의 작용인과 "미적 가치"의 목적인을 함께 실현할수 있는 개체성을 구성한다.
