Kim, Sang Yil “Study on the Four Tenets fo Daesoonjinri." The Academic Journal of Daesoonjinri 1 (2007): 97-122.
Abstract
This paper is designed to express two
important tenets of
Daesoonjinri, Yin-Yang cooperation and God-Man harmony, among four
tenets. For
Carl Jung Yin and Yang represent two principles, female and male
principle. The
former signifies yin-earth-female-night-darkness-emotion while the
latter
yang-heaven-male-day-brightness-reason respectively. Following Jung’s
term the
female principle is Anima whereas the male principle Animus.
Fundamental
differences between East and West are located in harmony and disharmony
between
two principles. In the case of western civilization, two principles are
not
harmonized through the historical traditions. Disharmony arose around
2000 B.
C. E. when is called Eunumma Ellish especially by Old Testament
theologians.
Lynn White defined this disharmony as “European Dissociation” and Karl Jaspers’ theory of Axial Age actually started from this period. Mythology is well explaining the characteristic of this period. Therefore, I will use mythology to clarify the nature of Ennuma Ellish in this paper. According to Indo-European Myths male god descending from heaven kills female Great Mother without exception. For instance Zeus kills Typhone, Marduk kills Tiamat, and Indra Kills Vritra, etc. This means dissociation of two principles, yin and yang. I think that it is real origin of yin-yang disharmony in the Western tradition. On the contrary, Korean Dangun myth is showing quite different nature from Indo-European myth, that is, Heavenly male god, Hwag-ung, married with Earthly Great Mother Bear woman as soon as came down on earth. It is very interesting comparison between two mythologies. I define such a Korean phenomena as “Korean Association” comparing with European Dissociation.
Daesoon’s two tenets are closely related to Korean Association and European Dissociation. Ying-Yang cooperation can be correctly understood when it is interpreted from the perspective of mythological senses. God-Man harmony is nothing but extension of yin-yang cooperation seeing it from the view of Korean Association. Considering two tenets in this way God-Man harmony can be naturally drawn from Yin-Yang cooperation. In other words, as a result of disharmony between Yin and Yang cooperation, God-Man harmony becomes possible. I coin a new term “haneunnim 하는님” meaning “dong God.” Haneunnim is shuttle making God between God and Earth. Any god fixing himself to God or Earth in not perfect at all. Christian god is now fixed to God so he is now incomplete. Daesoon’s two tenets overcome such a wrong concept of God.
