Abstract
원불교와 불교에 대한 질문에는 두 가지 입장이 있다. 하나는 매우 단순한 호기심에서 묻는 질문이고, 다른 하나는 왜 불교임을 공식적으로 표방하지 않느냐는 질책으로서의 질문이다. 질문의 내용은 다르지만, 두 질문 모두 원불교의 입장에 대한 자세한 정보를 가지고 묻는 질문이 아니라는 것은 공통적이다. 그래서 본 발표에서는 원불교의 입장과 그 입장이 형성되게 된 배경에 대하여 내용을 정리하고자 하였다.
원불교와 불교에 대한 관계를 정리한다는 것은 매우 조심스러운 내용이다. 그래서 가급적 개인의 의견을 피력하기 보다는 원불교를 세운 소태산의 말씀을 중심으로 내용을 전개해 보았다. 원불교의 입장에 대한 보다 자세한 정보제공이 되었으면 하는 마음이다.
개인의 의견을 말하자면, 원불교는 역사적 지역적 사상적으로 넒은 안목에서는 당연히 불교라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 그 시각을 좁혀서 이야기 한다면, 새로운 불교운동을 추구하는 불교교단의 모습을 가지고 있다고 생각한다. 보다 명확히 한국에서는 불교 아닌 모습으로 보일 수 있다. 그러나 길게 넓게 보면 원불교는 불교일 수 밖에 없다고 본다. [저자 결론에서]
The question to Won-Buddhism on the relation to Buddhism has two stand points. One is just for curiosity, the other one is a reproaching question that why Won-Buddhism does not officially proclaim as Buddhism. Both stand points are different, yet, both are common in an aspect that the question is asked without detailed information on stand point of Won-Buddhism. It is the reason to present this paper focused on the stand point of Won-Buddhism and the formational background of it.
It is very difficult and careful to settle or arrange the relation between Buddhism and Won-Buddhism. I choose to put the dharma words of the Founding Master Sot’aesan in order, rather than to express my humble opinion. I hope this would be a helpful informative paper on Won-Buddhism.
Lastly, to express my
short opinion, Won-Buddhism can be
said absolutely a Buddhism from the wide angle of history, region and
thought.
However, from narrowed angle, it has a figure for a Buddhist order that
pursues
new Buddhist movement. Clearly to speak, it may not be considered a
