Ives, Christopher A. "Awakening and the World: Foundations of a Zen Buddhist Social Ethic." (unpubl.)
Abstract
"With its emphasis on an Awakening beyond ecocentricity, freedom from self-created boundaries and dualistic views, openness, wisdom, compassion, simplicity ("enoughness"), mindful reverence, precepts, nonviolence, and cosmocentric intimacy with nature, Zen can contribute significantly to the effort to find a new way of human life that will be sustainable and fulfilling over time. To make this contribution, Zen must remain firmly grounded in its practice and, without lingering there, address suffering in all of its forms."
