Houston, G. W. , ed. The Cross and the Lotus: Christianity and Buddhism in Dialogue. Delhi: Motilal Banarsidass, 1985.
Abstract
Christian-Buddhist dialogue is certainly not a
new concept. It has gone on ever since Christian and Buddhist cultures
have been flung together historically, as has been demonstrated, for
example, by one article in this volume by Hans-J. Klimkeit. However,
within the last twenty years, Christian-Buddhist dialogue has emerged
as a discipline that deserves recognition. This book serves as a
symposium for serious authors and believers to wrestle with what appear
to be conflicting worl views. The authors who contributed essays for
this book are all recognized experts in their field: Hans J-Klimkeit,
Universität Bonn; George R. Elder, Hunter College; Donald W. Mitchell,
Purdue University; Roger J. Corless, Duke University; Lama Anagarika
Govinda; Luis O. Gómez, University of Michigan; David H. Fisher, George
Williams College; and Travis L. Rogers, Jr., Patrick Black, and Richard
Langdon. These last three are presently graduate students and former
students of Dr. Houston. As Dr. Houston points out in the introduction,
one can no longer ignore the fact that other major religions not only
exist but that they take salvation seriously. These are the days of
deep theological and philosophical reflection upon alternate world
views, or to say it another way, people looking out upon the universe
from their own separate windows have looked around and seen faces
staring out other windows.
