Abstract

As suggested by C.J. Ducasse, the merits of the expression theory of art can be clarified by focusing on the role of feeling images. In this paper, Ducasse’s theory is developed and defended against several major objections, and it is concluded that such a theory does justice to the central role of feeling in art without indulging in the romanticism so rightly attributed to the expression theory in the past.
