Abstract

This paper critically examines William Christian's view of the role of creativity in Whitehead's metaphysics and then constructs and defends an alternative interpretation.  Christian claims that creativity is merely a "pre-systematic" term which should be eliminated from Whitehead's system.  I contend, however, that such a move is neither possible nor desirable.  Instead, creativity is Whitehead's ultimate principle; it enhances both the coherence and the explanatory richness of his metaphysics.  [Abstract from The Philosopher’s Index]
