Abstract
Based on the theory of dynamical systems a formal and conceptual framework to describe mental states and their stability properties will be introduced. As an alternative to asymptotically stable mental representations and corresponding categorical states, the criterion of stability provides two additional options. The first is the limiting case of a flat potential with vanishing gradient, where no stable categories exist. Such mental states are non-categorial. The second option refers to mental states, which are located in the unstable regions between existing asymptotically stable representations and called acategorial states concerning their phenomenal perception can be shown. Especially changes of one of the most basic mental representations, the category of the “I” or “ego”, will be discussed.
