Abstract

Discusses theories attempting to solve the mind-body problem on the basis of scientific worldview. After reviewing theories based on the assumption that consciousness is a passive phenomenon lacking any causal role, the author posits that (1) consciousness is not passive but rather a part of the causation of behavior and (2) physics is inherently incomplete because it is unable to describe consciousness. The argument is then generalized: a causal influence of consciousness, in addition to all known physical forces, is claimed to underlie other modes of behavior as well.
