Barrett, J. Edwin. How Are You Programmed? Richmond, VA: John Knox Press, 1971.
Abstract
What
does it mean to be human? J. Edwin Barrett finds clues in our
continuity with the animal world and in what sets us apart - our
ability to preside over our genetic programming and social
conditioning. What distinguishes us from the spider and the dog, in
other words, is our personal freedom. After analyzing this elusive
concept, Dr. Barrett discusses it in relation to freedom's abuse (sin),
its fulfillment (through hope and creativity), and its meaning (for
God). He builds on the insights of scientific naturalism and Christian
humanism, developing a new theological synthesis. The result is a book
that pays homage to the quality and dignity of life.
