Abstract

Living organisms are made up of many sub-part-each of which responds to the environment and contributes to the whole.  Yet, the responses of parts are not merely to extend stimuli.  Analogous to human beings who are characterized by purposeful behavior, all living organisms have the property of purposeful activity.  [Bruce Epperly, 20 Jan. 1979]
