Abe, Masao.  “Buddhism and Christianity as Problem of Today – Part 2”  (Unpubl.)

Abstract

Christianity and Buddhism separate on the issue of the nature of God and creation.  Though the Christian God may negate himself, he cannot be identified with the absolute non-being of Buddhism.  Further, the Christian doctrine of God’s nature as personal is unable to comprehend the impersonal rationality of modern science.  Though Buddhism’s view of reality can include the findings of science and the contemporary nihilism in contrast to Christianity’s inability to include these factors, Buddhism needs to incorporate the ethical nature of Christianity.  Through the sharing of their respective insights, both religions may be enriched and a new horizon of spirituality be created.  [Bruce Epperly, 20 Jan. 1979]
